How does it know if I mean length, weight or temperature?
From the unit. Each symbol belongs to one group only: km is always length, kg weight, gal volume and mph speed. Minutes are "min", since "m" is meters.
Why is temperature different?
Other units are a simple ratio. Temperature scales also have different zero points (0°C is 32°F), so the tool adds an offset as well.
What happens below absolute zero?
You get an error. Absolute zero (-273.15°C, -459.67°F, 0 K) is the coldest possible temperature.
