Questions
Is SHA-512 more secure than SHA-256?
It has a larger safety margin, but SHA-256 isn't broken either. SHA-512 is often faster on 64-bit computers because it works in 64-bit words. SHA-256 is the more common default.
Why is a SHA-512 hash so long?
The length is set by the algorithm, not your input. SHA-512 is 512 bits, which is 128 hex characters. MD5 is 32 characters and SHA-1 is 40.
Can a SHA-512 hash be turned back into the text?
No. A hash is one-way. The only way to find the input is to guess and check.
Why doesn't my hash match another tool?
This tool hashes your text as UTF-8, like sha512sum. A trailing newline or a different text encoding gives a different hash.
What is the SHA-512 hash of an empty string?
